When we rolled out the competition for designing labels for the Hop Art series we could only hope for original and creative entries like this one. Bam! a black pint in your face! And what’s around it? Dotted lines, little hearts, birds, a rabbit, a snake? Lucy Francis, the artist who made this piece of art created this work in negative colors of the final result, so with a black pen on a white piece of paper. When we saw... Read more
Earlier this year we contributed to the graduation of Qianwei Tong at the Willem de Kooning Academie. See the result here; Hoppiness from Qiiiiiianweiiiiii on Vimeo.
After 6% Extra Lente and Factor 4 we have also brewed an seasonal autumn beer! If we brew an autumn beer it doesn’t have to be a bock. We think about how autumn tastes to us and we translate that to the beer. By the name of 6% Extra Herfst we brewed a hoppy autumn beer which we aged on oak. On top of a very malty base we added a nice layer of hops. To create balance between malt and hops we aged the beer... Read more
This weekend we were at the fantastic first edition of the Brewda festival in Breda, where Squid Squirt has won the podjebier Brew-Off challenge. We’re extra honored because the contest was judged by the public. We’ll make sure the trophy will get a nice place in the brewery. What shall we do now? Brew a big batch of it?
The design that we received from Jonathan Wanders with all its bright colors immediately drew our attention when we first saw it. He calls the work ‘couleur locale’. While he was designing he envisioned Hop Art in the spotlights behind a bar in a trendy club. We embraced that idea and made it an Urtyp Pilsener. First of all, an Urtyp pilsener contains a lot more hops than a ‘normal’ pilsener. Secondly because we were in the mood for joining... Read more
The sun never shines much in the Netherlands and for hard workers who work outside, factor 4 (sunscreen) suffices. Factor 4 is our first summer beer, a real session IPA. With only 3,8% ABV (hence the 4 in the name), a powerful 60 IBU bitterness and an overdose aromahops and dry hops this is a seasonal to look out for! In Factor 4 we used hops from New Zealand (Pacific Gem) and the USA (Cascade, Amarillo) which make it a... Read more
Together with the boys from Kompaan bier we went to Berlin last weekend, to join the Global Craft Beer Brewers Congress and Festival, organized by the GACBB. During the congress we both took part in the juries for the Craft Beer Awards and there we tasted and judged a lot of fantastic beers. The next day, during the festival, Ronald joined a panel discussion about the definition of ‘Craft Beer’, together with the founder of the Harpoon brewery from the... Read more
The Carnivale Brettanomyces is one of the festivals where we love to go as visitors. It’s not really that we love to drink a lot of sour beers, but there are so many nice experimental beers to taste. This year we decided to join the festival as brewers and enter an experimental beer of our own. We brewed a beer with 50% pilsner malt and 50% pale malt. The pale malt gives the beer the little bit more maltyness to... Read more
When the guys from our favorite Dutch beer podcast Podjebier.nl asked us to join them in their Brew Off, we immediately said YES! (Read more) Remy is a big fan of oyster stouts and he drinks them all day long. After a good brainstorm we came to the idea of brewing an oyster stout without using any oysters. Immediately the idea of herring stout popped up, so we put a fresh herring on wodka. On the brewday we went to... Read more
Days are getting longer, the sun is shining and the terraces open again. Time for a fresh springtime beer! Last week we brewed our springtime beer ‘6% extra lente’ (6% extra spring). It is a hoppy blonde beer, with extra hops and additional springtime. 6% Extra Lente is our seasonal limited edition Spring beer, and will be poured at the Lentebockfestival 2014, on 4, 5 en 6 April at the Ledig Erf in Utrecht. Besides that, we’ll make sure that... Read more
